   Survivor Benefits
If you die before termination of state service, monthly survivor benefits are payable to a surviving spouse, and if no surviving spouse, to dependent children under age 20. Monthly benefits that are payable to a surviving spouse are payable for life. If survivor benefits are payable to dependent children, they are payable until age 20, or for five years, whichever is later.

Survivor benefits are based on the laws governing the General Employees Retirement Plan and are determined using a person's high-five salary, years of service, and age at the time of death. Please contact MSRS if you would like an estimate of the monthly survivor benefits payable from your account.

If, at the time of your death, you do not have a surviving spouse or dependent children, your beneficiary is entitled to a refund of your contributions plus 6 percent interest. If you do not designate a beneficiary, your account would be payable in this order:
  • surviving children in equal shares
  • surviving parents in equal shares
  • to your estate
