   Survivor Benefits
If an employee covered by the State Fire Marshals Retirement Plan dies before termination of state service, monthly survivor benefits are payable to a surviving spouse and if no surviving spouse to dependent children under age 20. Monthly benefits payable to a surviving spouse are payable for life. If survivor benefits are payable to dependent children, they are payable until age 20, or for five years, whichever is later.

Survivor benefits are based on a person's high five salary, years of service, and age at the time of death, and are based on the laws governing the General Employees Retirement Plan. Please contact MSRS if you would like an estimate of the monthly survivor benefits payable from your account.

If you die without a surviving spouse or dependent children, your beneficiary is entitled to a refund or your contributions plus six percent interest. If you do not designate a beneficiary, your account would be payable to your surviving children, if none, to your surviving parents, and if none to your estate.
